  • Cook Time: 40 minutes

  • Total Time: About 1 hour

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Dietary: Vegetarian

Ingredients

Apples

  • 1 tin canned tart apples (about 800 g), drained

  • Ground cinnamon, to taste

  • Butter, a few small knobs (optional)

Batter

  • 1¾ cups plain flour

  • 1 dessertspoon baking powder

  • 1 large egg (or 2 small eggs)

  • 500 g butter or margarine, softened

  • ¾ cup sugar

  • 400–500 ml water

Syrup

  • 1 cup golden syrup

  • 250 g butter

Method

Batter

  1. Sift the flour and baking powder together.

  2. Cream the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.

  3. Beat in the egg (or eggs).

  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with the water, mixing to form a very loose, pourable batter.

Assemble and bake

  1. Heat the oven to 180°C fan.

  2. Arrange the apples evenly in a greased baking dish. Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.
(Traditional note: extra butter can be dotted over the apples, but this is optional as the apples are already rich.)

  3. Pour the batter evenly over the apples.

  4. Bake for about 40 minutes, until set and lightly golden.

Syrup

  1. While the tart is baking, gently heat the golden syrup and butter together until fully melted and combined.

  2. As soon as the tart comes out of the oven, pour the hot syrup evenly over the top.

  3. Allow to stand for 10 minutes before serving so the syrup soaks in.
